April 6, 2008 April Birthdays 4/7 - Luther Durant 4/11 - Jim Wait 4/13 - Late Scrabble creator Alfred Mosher Butts was born on this day in 1899. A tournament in his hometown of Poughkeepsie, NY (and about 20 miles away from my hometown of Montgomery, NY) is being held this year. 4/15- new Tempe club member Sam Toledo 4/17 - ??? March 9, 2008 On March 23, club will be held at my house (beginning at 1:15 as usual). The Escalante Center is closed on that day because of Easter. February 9, 2008 There will be no club on Sunday, Feb 17 due to the Phoenix tournament. Good luck to all of us who are playing! Go to cross-tables.com for the entry list September 5, 2007 Congratulations to Mike Wier who was the Division 3 winner at the Labor Day Portland tournament! May 20, 2007 The club's 3rd anniversary party/special session will be held on Sunday June 3. Lots of food, prizes, gifts, etc. Hope you can all make it! April 16, 2007 Luther celebrated a birthday on April 7. Inventor of Scrabble, Alfred Mosher Butts was born on April 13. December 29, 2006 Due to holidays and tournaments, there are some cancellations in the next few weeks. Dec 31: No club--Escalante Center closed Jan 7: Club will be held. Jim L will direct Jan 14: No club. Several members will be at Reno tournament and on vacation Jan 21: Club will be held as normal. In the next 3 months, the only cancellation I foresee is during the weekend of the Phoenix tournament (Feb 18). April 28, 2006 Please join us on Sunday, June 4 for the annual club anniversary extravaganza! There will be food, door prizes, special prizes during every round, and end-of the-year recognition to club members for various accomplishments. Hope to see you then! April 30, 2005 Please join us for an anniversary celebration on June 5, 2005 as club 609 turns one. Cake and other goodies will be provided. Each round will feature special prizes, including books, Protiles, and other items. Awards will be given out for various achievements. In addition, each regular player will receive yearly personalized stats including, win-loss records and average score against all opponents and a list of all bingos played. If you have any suggestions regarding changes for the 2005-06 year (e.g., prizes, changes to the website, etc. please let me know. March 13, 2005 There will be no club on Sunday, March 27. February 6, 2005 Congratulations to my mom, Jo Anne Cohen, for taking third place in Division 3 at the Atlantic City Tournament. Good going, ma!!! January 19, 2005 Missing tiles alert! Ruth Flynn is missing a set of tiles that she brought to club several weeks ago. If anyone's seen an extra set among their Scrabble items, let me know and we'll get them back to her. Thanks! December 6 Congratulations to Sarah King and Cathy Coking for winning their respective divisions in the Tucson tournament. Sarah was 10-3, +402 in Division 2; Cathy Coking was 11-2, +1034 in Division 3. Also, congrats to Barbara Van Alen who came in 3rd in Division 2 and Barbara Gray who came in 4th in Division 3. At least one of us "crashed and burned," suffering defeat after crushing defeat and went home whimpering with her tail between her legs. If anyone else feels that they fit this description, please join me in a mantra of...We'll get 'em next time! November 16 Congratulations to James Johnson who came in 7th in last weekend's Las Vegas Tournament with an 11-5 +521 record (Div 3)! James was the only club member to finish "in the money". Thanks to Larry and Barbara for running a great event! October 18 Big congratulations go to Mike Wier and Con Downey for their performances in the Denver Tournament this weekend. Mike took first place in Division 2 with a 16-2 +1340 record (4 more wins than the second place winner). Con took first place in Division 3 with a 13-5 +431 record. Way to go, guys! October 12 Good luck to Mike Wier and Con Downey who are competing in this weekend's "Rocky Mountain Rumble" tournament in Denver, CO. October 11 Location change. On October 24 and 31, we will meet at the Westside Community Center in Tempe. The Center is located on 715 W. Fifth St in Tempe. Fifth St is just north of University Dr. The Center is located between Hardy Dr and Mill Ave. For more information, see www.tempe.gov/westside Next Sunday, October 17, we will meet at the regular place.
October 7 Club member, Stephanie Huang is a violinist with the Tempe Symphony Orchestra. They will be having their first concert on Monday, October 11 at McClintock High School, located on McClintock and Southern (actual street address is 1830 E. Del Rio Dr.). Admission is free. The CBS Morning show will feature a piece on the National SCRABBLE Championship this Sunday, Oct 3 betwen 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM. The Finals will be broadcast on ESPN at 10:00 AM.
